Like most of you, I love the movie Mean Girls. I was 16 when the movie came out and I resonated with it in a lot of ways. However, over the past decade Mean Girls has made such a huge impact on the lives of young girls, both positive and not so positive.
I’ve seen girls harass each other online, using quotes from the movie, as if that somehow makes them less responsible for their actions. Tina Fey wrote Mean Girls not to inspire bullying, but to put an end to it. Clearly, the ending of the movie went over a lot of people’s heads. It baffles me how oblivious people are to what their words can do to someone.
Bullying has become such a widespread epidemic within the past 10 years, especially with the popularity of social media. I urge you all to keep an eye out for people who are being bullied, no matter their age, and stand up for what is right. Let the underdogs sit with you. You just might save a life and make a lifelong friend.
Be kind. Always. Everyone is fighting a battle.
